Why Splendid Isolation? By most people’s standards, we live in a pretty remote location. We are 8 miles from the nearest neighbor (and our mailbox), 20 miles to the nearest stop sign, 25 miles to the nearest gas pump, and 90 miles to the nearest stoplight. Our house is at 7500′ elevation, completely surrounded by the Santa Fe National Forest. All you can see from the windows is rock and ponderosa forest.
The name is taken from the title of a song by Warren Zevon, which opens
I want to live all alone in the desertWarren Zevon – “Splendid Isolation” from the album “Transverse City”
I want to be like Georgia O’Keefe
Our house is 25 miles from Ghost Ranch, where O’Keefe was introduced to this part of New Mexico. We are 40 miles from her house in Abiquiu.
